Admitting they have been sexually abused, coerced or manipulated at any time in their life is especially hard for 'Black' men to admit. Yet, sexual abuse of African descent boys and men over the life-course in communities and institutions in Canada is an open secret about which too few want to openly discuss. Much of the evidence from communities is anecdotal and a search of journals and databases indicate there is no scholarly research available. The misandrist presumption that males always want sex and that sexual abuse of boys and men is not impactful mistakes is amplified by the erroneous statistics that result from the significantly lower rates of disclosure among males over the life-course. The result is that rape of boys and men is either regarded inconsequential, of low prevalence and treated with indifference. Possibly relying on racial tropes and reframing victimization as agency, Black men frequently misidentify or redefine and reframe especially heterosexual childhood abuse and adult coercion and manipulation. Occasionally, evidence emerges from racial profiling and police strip search data and case law to show that institutionalized sexual assault of African descent males is far more widespread than imagined. This page serves to provide evidence for the prevalence and harmful impacts of sexual of African descent males over the life-course, as well as to promote disclosure and help seeking among African descent males in Canada.
