The UCLA Black Male Institute

The Black Male Institute (BMI) is an initiative housed within the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools (CTS). BMI is dedicated to advancing educational equity by exploring and addressing the barriers that disproportionately impact Black male students. Through research, mentorship, and community engagement, BMI supports strategies that promote success and opportunity for all students, with a focused lens on the experiences of Black males.

Since 2009, BMI has convened annual Think Tanks that bring together educators, researchers, and community leaders to share insights and solutions. The initiative has also welcomed more than 500 middle and high school students to the UCLA campus, offering inclusive enrichment experiences designed to inspire academic achievement and college-going aspirations. BMI is focused on means by which the educational experiences and life chances of Black males in the United States may be improved.
